Dorothy Simmons

 

 

Dorothy Simmons grew up in Northern Ireland, studied at Edinburgh University and moved to Australia as a young adult. Since then, she has juggled high school teaching in English and Drama with creative and professional writing, and tutoring at La Trobe University.

Dorothy’s first published work was a play, ‘Night Exercise’, performed by the Murray River Performing Group. She went on to write  four Young Adult novels, ‘Video Zone’, ‘Ridge’, ‘Frames’ and ‘Time Out’, published by Lothian Books.

 Dorothy’s poetry and short fiction have appeared in various literary magazines, including ‘5 Bells’,’The Greenhouse’, ‘Southerly’, ‘4W’ ( Booranga Writers ), and most recently in ‘Best Australian Stories 2010’, ‘Etchings’, ‘Fire’ and ‘Knitting’ ( Margaret River Press ), ‘Hecate’ and ‘ Out of Place’ ( Spineless Wonders ).  Non-fiction articles have appeared in ‘Metaphor’, the professional journal of English teachers (NSW), and ‘Antipodes’, the publication of the American Association of Australasian Literary Studies.

 Dorothy’s PhD in Creative Writing at Melbourne University, completed in 2014, comprised the critical ‘Such is life: myth and meaning’ and what became her latest novel, ‘Living like a Kelly’.
